Fort Greene, from 55 Hanson Place (Part One)

1926 by Brown Brothers
New York Public Library #730003F

67 Hanson Place, the building in the foreground of the 2009 photo, was built 1929-30, shortly after the original was taken. It replaced a few 3-story brownstones not visible in the first photo. 55 Hanson, the former Central Branch Y, is now the New York State office building.

Note that the prominent church in the first photo is still present, without its steeple.

The prominent church is the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church. The famous Brooklyn poet Marianne Moore was a parishioner there when she lived in the neighborhood. The steeple was taken down when the subway was built through, in the 1930's.
