Most of the stores on this stretch of Port Richmond Ave are shut down, although most of them look like they were recently open. This store hasn't changed much in seventy-five years. Cutting through the photo in the later view is the North Shore line of the Staten Island Railway. |

This is the Tysen-Neville House, one of the last few grand houses left on Richmond Terrace. (The empty lots and staircases to nowhere lining the street give hints of where others used to be.) It was once the Stone Jug tavern, and is a designated landmark. |

This week, Re-Brooklyn is on a vacation of sorts — please enjoy this series of photos of Staten Island, which has more cool old buildings than the other four boroughs combined. Sad for those photobloggers that don't live there. |

Changes in the structure of the roof made reproducing this exact angle impossible, but the contrast is interesting enough that I've included it anyway. |

67 Hanson Place, the building in the foreground of the 2009 photo, was built 1929-30, shortly after the original was taken. It replaced a few 3-story brownstones not visible in the first photo. 55 Hanson, the former Central Branch Y, is now the New York State office building. Note that the prominent church in the first photo is still present, without its steeple. |

This is a reshoot of an earlier attempt. A rear view of the church has been obscured by the new construction. |
