But not for awhile. I'm on a temporary hiatus while I pursue my new hobby, "living in Seattle."

If you're at all interested in the sort of urban history stuff I've been posting here, then you should stay tuned to this space, where I will occasionally post projects like my recent work, The Block, for your enjoyment and edification. If you're not already watching the RSS feed rather than checking manually, now would be a great time to start, as it's going to be quiet around here for a little while.

A Brief Interlude in Manhattan

Excuse the delay in posts lately. I'd like to draw your attention to another project that's been consuming my time, THE BLOCK — the complete history of a single block on the Lower East Side -- Eldridge between Rivington and Stanton, to be exact. Weeks of painstaking research culminate in a detailed, animated look at eight generations of buildings on a single street.

The photo's original caption notes that this house was built in 1855. It is now a bed and breakfast. Note the considerable ivy growth on the building in the mid-background.

Vacation on Staten Island #5: Ann Street and Port Richmond Avenue

Most of the stores on this stretch of Port Richmond Ave are shut down, although most of them look like they were recently open. This store hasn't changed much in seventy-five years. Cutting through the photo in the later view is the North Shore line of the Staten Island Railway.

This is the Tysen-Neville House, one of the last few grand houses left on Richmond Terrace. (The empty lots and staircases to nowhere lining the street give hints of where others used to be.) It was once the Stone Jug tavern, and is a designated landmark.

67 Hanson Place, the building in the foreground of the 2009 photo, was built 1929-30, shortly after the original was taken. It replaced a few 3-story brownstones not visible in the first photo. 55 Hanson, the former Central Branch Y, is now the New York State office building. Note that the prominent church in the first photo is still present, without its steeple.
